Lumbago: when suddenly nothing works anymore

You bent down, lifted a bag or turned around – and then there it was: that sharp, shooting pain in the lower back. Maybe you can hardly straighten up, every step is uncomfortable, and you do not know whether you should move or rest. This is lumbago – and although it feels dramatic, it is in most cases not a sign of serious damage.

Lumbago is an acute pain reaction in the area of the lumbar spine. The causes are varied: protective muscle tension, irritation of joint structures, trigger points, or a combination of load and an unfavourable starting point. What matters is an honest assessment – and a structured first step.

Please seek medical assessment if you experience numbness or tingling in the leg or foot, significant loss of strength, bladder or bowel problems, fever, or if symptoms followed an accident.

How lumbago can feel

How I can help

I start with a careful anamnesis: how did it happen, how long has it been there, what makes it better or worse? This is followed by a targeted physical examination – movement directions, pain behaviour, muscle tension, possible warning signs. The goal is a clear assessment: what is the most likely mechanism, and what is the most helpful next step?

Depending on the findings, I use manual techniques to reduce protective tension and allow movement again. Dry Needling is an optional addition for muscular trigger points. I also give targeted guidance: what you can do in the next 24–48 hours, how to manage pain and movement, when heat is useful – and when it is not.

My goal is that after the appointment you not only feel treated, but know what to do next.

Frequently asked questions

Should I rest or move with lumbago?

Graduated movement is in most cases better than complete bed rest. What this means in practice – which positions help, what to avoid – we discuss after the assessment.

How long does lumbago last?

This is individual. Many acute episodes improve within a few days to two weeks. Targeted support can often help shape the course positively and assess the risk of recurrence.

Can lumbago be caused by a herniated disc?

Not every case of lumbago involves a disc herniation. Typical signs of nerve root involvement (radiation with numbness, tingling, loss of strength) are something I address openly during the assessment – and I refer to a doctor when appropriate.

What helps immediately?

Heat (if comfortable), small movement impulses within tolerable ranges, finding a comfortable lying position. What specifically helps in your situation is something we work out together in the appointment.

Is dry needling useful for lumbago?

It can support certain muscular tension states and trigger points. I only use it when it suits your findings and you want it.

Do I need a referral or prescription?

Not in my practice. If medical assessment seems appropriate, I will say so openly.
